Week 10

Image
Hello fellow bloggers! I have some big news... I bought three fish! This was a very impulsive decision, but I thought it would be fun to have some apartment-friendly pets. I ended up in the pet store because one of my friends wanted to get some fish, but she decided against it, and I decided I was going to get a few of the 16-cent goldfish.  I'm not expecting them to last forever solely based off of their price, but their purpose is to just provide a little bit of happiness for however long they live. They still don't have any names, so if you have any ideas feel free to drop them in the comments. We haven't had a track meet in two weeks and somehow, I'm more exhausted without them. We were supposed to have a track meet this weekend, but they ended up canceling it due to the weather. So, in lieu of a track meet, our coaches had us do an intra-squad mixed-gender relay race. We were broken up into groups for a 4x200 meter, 30-lap, and 5x400 meter relay races. We were all

Chapter 10 of the textbook I am slowly but surely reading is about marketing with YouTube. Personally, I don't watch a lot of videos on YouTube, and I was excited to read about how businesses can use the site for marketing. As always, the chapter begins by giving you some background on the app - did you know that YouTube has over 2.3 billion active users, which is almost one-third of the entire internet, and users watch over 5 billion videos every single day? Like most other social media platforms, the majority of the content is free, and they have videos for virtually everyone.  The text says that 81 percent of businesses use video in their marketing strategies and that 93 percent of businesses gain a new customer after posting a video. In addition to this, social media sites are changing their algorithms to prioritize videos, as mobile device users are beginning to have shorter attention spans and are increasing their consumption of videos.  YouTube is one of the top channels fo

Week 9 @ ONU

Hello again blogging world, I'm back to my regularly scheduled weekly updates on life at ONU. Not much has happened this week besides schoolwork. I feel like I am still trying to catch up on the things I didn't quite finish before the end of last week, but I'm getting through it slowly but surely.  I didn't have a track meet this weekend, so my boyfriend and I decided we wanted to go to Columbus for some retail therapy. We went down a little bit out of the way because I wanted to browse this place that sells concrete statues - I've been searching for a reasonably priced concrete goose to put on the porch at my house next year. Concrete statues are so much more expensive than I thought they would be! The smallest animal he had was $53... out of my budget for sure, so I'm going to keep looking! If you know of somewhere I could acquire a concrete goose, comment below!!!! After this extra stop, and a stop for lunch at Raising Cane's, we were back on our way to t

Time to learn about marketing with LinkedIn! LinkedIn is the world's largest professional networking site. There are over 740 million users in over 200 countries worldwide. LinkedIn is a great place for professionals to stay connected and informed, apply for jobs, advance their careers, and much more. Users can join groups to receive expert advice, discuss topics with peers, and find news about industries. The platform was founded in 2002 and reached 1 million users by 2004, and then reached 10 million in 2007.  LinkedIn is a great place for building your personal brand and networking with other professionals in your field. However, it is also a great place for brands to build relationships with employees and customers and gain valuable leads. Personally, I think of LinkedIn as "Professional Facebook" because the features, look, and feel are very similar to Facebook.  LinkedIn posts can consist of text, call-to-action links, images, videos, and polls. You can also post s

Spring Break Recap!

Image
Welcome to a rather long update of what happened over spring break! I started off the weekend with a track meet at ONU. This meet was a last chance meet to qualify for the nationals meet the next weekend. It actually ended up going very well! I set another new personal best, and I qualified for nationals!!! The next day I was finally able to make a trip home for the first time since coming back to school in January. It was so nice to have a relaxing weekend with my family and my dog. I was only able to stay for about a day and a half since I qualified for nationals and needed to come back for practice, but I made the most out of the trip. I was able to hang out with my mom and see my younger cousins for a little while. The kids were really excited to see us and wanted us to jump on their trampoline with them, so we jumped for about two hours, and I was so tired afterward! I then headed back to Ada for one last pole vault practice before making the trip to North Carolina early Wednesda

This week's chapter talks about Pinterest, which was founded in 2009 by a group of college kids. They created Pinterest because they wanted a social media outlet where people could show and save collections of things that they are interested in. After many test runs, Pinterest was launched in March of 2010. Pinterest is best described as a visual pinboard-style social sharing network. People can represent ideas as pins with a visually appealing image or video and attach a description as well as a link back to an original online source. Pinterest allows users to save and categorize pins they create or discover onto different boards. At first, Pinterest saw slow growth with only a few thousand users within months of being launched. However, the platform grew to become one of the top 10 largest social networking sites by 2011. Today they have 459 million monthly users and over 240 billion pins.  Naturally, as Pinterest grew, they made some changes so that business accounts can add mor

Live Tweeting!

Image
The latest assignment in my social media class was to live Tweet an event, then post about it on our blog. For this assignment, I went to the OHSAA District Basketball Tournament that was held at ONU tonight.  Originally, I was going to this event to work for the sports information job I have on campus, but I thought this would be a great event for the live-tweeting assignment. I was tweeting during the first game of the night, and if I could go back and do it again I probably would have tweeted during the second game. The second game was more exciting, but I have never live-tweeted before so it probably would have been more difficult for me. All in all, I enjoyed watching both games and thought it was a cool experience sitting in the press row. If you want to check out the rest of my tweets from this event, my username is @anna_schatzle!

This week's chapter is about marketing with Snapchat.  Snapchat is the perfect outlet for businesses looking to market towards younger age groups. Marketing with Snapchat is more successful with quick, funny, in-the-moment pictures and videos. It's recommended to keep posts under 2 minutes unless covering an event or storytelling. The best way to tell a story or market a product on Snapchat is to post multiple snaps back to back building anticipation.  Holding contests on the app is another way that has been successful in reaching more users. It has also been proven that sixty percent of college students on the app are more likely to purchase a product they saw if they were also given a coupon or incentive. Finally, hiring influencers is another great way to attract followers and increase awareness.
